In the market place today, there are a number of different methods and models concerning software development and software process assessment. During the last years the use of pre built software components has increased and a lot of companies are now developing software with a component-based approach. Software developers as well as software process assessors have experienced problems when using existing models in a component based context, due to the fact that these models are not covering specific practices used in component based development (CBD). In order to fill in the gaps of the existing models OOSPICE is now investigating these practices for the creation of a CBD specific process reference model, which works as a starting point for the development of a CBD method and process assessment methodology. Hence the challenge for OOSPICE is to combine the knowledge of software process assessment and component based development.
